Thick Toenails, Discoloration, and Odor: What’s Going On?

Thick toenails, odd colors, and funky smells aren’t just cosmetic concerns. They can be signs of deeper issues with your foot health. Don’t panic if you noticed any of these symptoms, though! Let’s break down what might be going on, what you can do about it, and when to call us.

Thick toenails: Why are they hard like a rock?

Toenails can become thick for several reasons, but the most common is a fungal infection, known as onychomycosis. You might also notice the nail becoming brittle, yellow, or crumbly.

Other causes include repeated trauma from tight shoes or stubbed toes, natural changes that come with aging, underlying skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, or even poor circulation especially in individuals with diabetes.

Thick nails can be hard to trim and even painful, particularly if they start pressing against your shoes or become infected.

Discoloration: Not just dirt under the nail

A healthy toenail should be pale pink with a slight sheen. If your nails are turning yellow, brown, white, dark purple, or even green, it may signal an underlying problem.

Yellow or brown nails are often due to fungal infections. White and chalky nails may be the result of trauma or a fungal buildup. Dark purple or black nails are usually bruised, often from repetitive trauma or pressure. A green hue can indicate a bacterial infection.

Discoloration usually means the nail isn’t getting enough oxygen or is fighting off an infection. Even if it seems minor, persistent or worsening discoloration is worth getting checked out.

Odor: when things smell… off

Feet naturally sweat, but persistent odor, especially from the toenails, is not normal. Strong smells may point to a fungal or bacterial infection, moisture trapped in socks or shoes, or skin conditions like athlete’s foot, which can spread to the nails if left untreated.

Fungus and bacteria love warm, damp environments, and once they settle into the nail or surrounding skin, they can be hard to eliminate without proper care. If your nail odor doesn’t improve with hygiene and clean socks, it may be time to take action.
