When you hear the word bunions, you typically think of a large “bump” on the inside of the foot behind the big toe. However, a classic “bunion” is a deformity of the entire first row of the foot or the top of the big toe to the end of the first metatarsal bone in the foot. At Beyond Podiatry, we offer bunion surgery to remove these uncomfortable bumps off of your toes so that you can continue to wear the footwear you love without sacrificing your style, or your peace of mind.
What Is Bunion Surgery?
Bunion surgery is a straightforward, typically outpatient procedure that is done to reduce the pain and correct the deformity caused by a bunion. A bunion (hallux valgus) is an enlargement of the bone or tissue around a joint at the base of the big toe or little toe. This enlargement is more common in women due to the kind of footwear they wear. Shoes that are tight, pointed, and constricting are the most common reason for bunion formation.
Symptoms of Bunions
Having restrictions when it comes to your footwear can feel limiting especially if you are a shoe lover. Thankfully our team at Beyond Podiatry offers solutions to help get rid of those uncomfortable bumps. Aside from the bony bump at the base of your big toe, you might also experience:
- Tenderness or inflammation
- Redness over your toe joint
- Restricted toe joint movement
- Calluses over the bony bump
- Difficulty wearing shoes comfortably
How Does Bunion Surgery Work?
Typical bunion surgery is performed under ankle block anesthesia, but general or spinal anesthesia may sometimes be used as well depending on the severity of the problem. During a standard operation, your foot will be numb, but you will remain awake. Over the course of the surgery, your bunion will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution. Once the area is sufficiently numb, the podiatrist will cut, realign, and possibly remove portions of the bone, ligaments, or tendons if necessary. At the end of the surgery, the treated area will be closed with stitches and a sterile bandage or dressing will be applied.
