A sprained ankle can range from minor to quite serious, with the more serious sprains potentially looming as long-term issues.

They can happen when you accidentally put too much pressure on your ankle doing extensive activities. If your ankle is accidentally turned in an unnatural position, it may cause stress on the muscle. When you sprain your ankle, you can stretch or even tear the ligaments that surround your ankle bones. If you have experienced any of these injuries, our medical staff at Beyond Podiatry can help. Find the nearest location to you and schedule your appointment today.

Causes of A Sprained Ankle

Sometimes ankle sprains occur because a person is born with weak ankles. If you have experienced a previous ankle or foot injury, it can weaken the ankle and lead to future sprains. Sprained ankles often result from a fall, a sudden twist, or a blow that forces the ankle joint out of its normal position. These kinds of injuries commonly occur while participating in sports, wearing inappropriate shoes, or walking or running on an uneven surface.

Signs of a Sprained Ankle

If you have a sprained ankle, you may have all of these symptoms at one time. Usually, the symptoms start fairly quickly or even immediately after your injury or accident. The signs of a sprained ankle include:

  • Discomfort or pain after you twist or land badly on your ankle
  • Swollen ankle, sometimes including part of the leg and foot
  • Bruising or discoloration around the ankle

How To Treat a Sprained Ankle

When you arrive for your appointment, your podiatrist at Beyond Podiatry may use compression bandages or a splint to immobilize your ankle so you can heal effectively.
